Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Civic engagement among youths is critical for the sustainability of democracy and socio-economic development. Social media, as a contemporary communication tool, has significantly reshaped the dynamics of youth participation in civic matters. Platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram have become avenues for information sharing, mobilization, and collective action, empowering young people to engage in governance and community-building (Ibrahim & Musa, 2023). In Nigeria, where youth make up a substantial proportion of the population, the potential of social media to enhance civic engagement cannot be overstated. In Dambatta Local Government Area, Kano State, where traditional political structures often limit youth participation, social media offers an alternative space for expression and activism. However, questions remain about the extent to which social media facilitates meaningful civic engagement rather than performative participation (Ahmed et al., 2024). This study investigates the influence of social media on civic engagement among youths in Dambatta, focusing on its impact on political awareness, activism, and community involvement.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite the growing popularity of social media among youths, its effectiveness in fostering genuine civic engagement remains debatable. In Dambatta, where socio-economic challenges and limited access to formal education persist, many youths rely on social media as their primary source of information. However, the prevalence of misinformation, echo chambers, and superficial engagement often undermines the potential of social media as a tool for meaningful participation. Furthermore, there is limited empirical data on how social media shapes the civic behaviors and attitudes of youths in the region. This study seeks to address these gaps by exploring the role of social media in promoting or hindering civic engagement among youths in Dambatta Local Government Area.
